John Montague original portrait signed & dated
Raymond Piper HRHA 1999
An original portrait in oils on canvas by the Northern Ireland artist Raymond Piper HRHA of the poet John Montague who was born in Brooklyn, New York but who grew up in Tyrone from the age of 4 onwards.
Measuring 36 by 26 inches with Piper's signature and the date 1999 in the bottom right corner. This painting was originally exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy's Annual Exhibition in 2000. This almost impressionistic style is an intentional and marvellous interpetation of the personality of the poet by Piper! Ordinarily his portraits were finished in a tight realism. Here the painting is softer in form and at times seems almost unfinished. The style of this finish was Piper's interpretation of Montague as a person and as a poet.
Framed in a tasteful gilt beaded frame with a caption in the mount of the sitter and the artist. On the rear is a label outlining the original RHA exhibition details. The image shown is taken by me with a digital camera. The light makes the mounting look whiter than it actually is and it makes the gilt frame paler. I am happy to provide other images if required.
