€2850.00
Unique signed manuscript sheet; 'First Love'

This is a unique manuscript sheet of the 1st page from the play 'First Love' on rag paper and is signed by Samuel Beckett.

To commemorate Samuel Beckett being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969 Marguerite Cohn, owner of the House of Books bookstore, arranged with him to produce  the first page only from six of his plays. Each of the six sheets are typed on rag paper and each are signed in black ink by Beckett.

For sale here is the only existing manuscript sheet of the play 'First Love. Originally written in French as 'Premier Amour' in 1946, later Beckett translated it into English as 'First Love and other stories'. The play is about a man who meets a woman on a bench in a cematary. He moves into her home, becomes housebound and then leaves her as she is having his child.

Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969 'for his writing, which  in new forms for the novel and drama -  on the destitution of the modern man, acquires it's elevation'.

This sheet measure's roughly 9 by 6 inches in size and is in pristine condition. I have another of these unique manuscript sheets for sale elsewhere on this site.
